Industrial Hygiene (IH) is a science and art devoted to the anticipation, recognition, evaluation, prevention, and control of those environmental factors or stresses arising in or from the workplace which may cause sickness, impaired health and wellbeing, or significant discomfort among workers or citizens of the community (AIHA). At East Carolina University, the program scope involves the assessment and control of physical, chemical, and environmental hazards such as noise, extreme temperatures, physical and chemical contaminants, indoor environmental discomforts, and other occupational hazards to keep employees, students and visitors safe. The program also oversees compressed gas safety,
OSHA Medical surveillance screening and the use of personal protective equipment.
The Office of Environmental Health and Safety will conduct health risk assessment, based on needs or requests, and offer effective recommendations to control potential or existing hazards. Employees are therefore encouraged to contact EH&S directly to report issues relating to any of the program elements listed above, including those not listed but which presents a health and safety concern on campus. The goal of the program is to ensure a safe and comfortable environment that support student learning and academic activities.
