College of Engineering and Technology
Welcome to the ECU Department of Computer Science
Contrary to the popular belief that the computing discipline is about computer programming, computing professionals help humanity by solving real-world problems through the innovative and creative use of computer hardware and software.
According to the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics, by 2020, 1 out of 2 STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) jobs will be in the computing discipline. What is more interesting is that many of these jobs have been either created not long ago or will be created soon in response to rapid advances in the discipline.
Computing professionals are at the forefront of solving grand challenge problems such as world hunger, drug discovery, personalized medicine, next generation airplanes, self-driving automobiles, pollution control, and protecting the environment.
No matter what your academic and career pursuits are, computing knowledge gives you an edge. It transforms you from being a consumer of software technologies to a creator of solutions to problems that matter most to our society.
Typically students planning to pursue graduate professional degrees in medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, and physical therapy choose biology or chemistry as an undergraduate major. However, an undergraduate computing degree gives you unparalleled advantage for admission to graduate professional degrees and beyond.
